This post is for those repeatedly asking, “Have you seen the flamingos lately?”
This past weekend Anguilla enjoyed a beautiful pink visitor in the form of a young American Flamingo.
Ellen Schultz tagged me in a visitor post on August 10th with a sighting on West End Pond. Naturally, I popped into the car with my camera in hand, to search for said bird.
We last saw our regular pair in March 2023. It was a short visit due to multiple tourists trying to get too close for selfies with the pair.
This bird appears to be much younger than our regular visitors. The plumage is lighter with a few darker feathers on the wings. If I were to guess the bird’s age, I would put it at about two to three years.
With all the wild weather around the Caribbean these days, I expect it was outrunning it. I checked the pond after Tropical Storm Ernesto passed Anguilla, and it was gone. I hope it made a safe retreat to its home.
Many thanks to Ellen for alerting me to the presence of this special visitor!
Too bad it didn't stay longer but hopefully it got to its next destination safely. Thank you for sharing, Jackie. What a joy to see!
So sad that he/she is gone! Hoping it returns…when I return…in November!
