Celebrating Migratory Bird Day With Birdlife International Live
A Celebration of Global Bird Weekend
Nothing says Migratory Bird Day like the arrival of an American Flamingo on Road Salt Pond!
As I made my way into one of the great weekends of the year—Global Bird Weekend—celebrating Global Bird Day and Migratory Bird Day, I hoped it would still be on the island for the count.
On Saturday morning I headed straight to Road Salt Pond to begin the count. The bird was present and hiding in the mangrove. While it is not one of our original birds, it was still great to see it feeding happily. I assumed it was here for safety with several storm systems in the area.
In addition to various shore and land birds at this location, I found a group of seven Pectoral Sandpipers feeding with yellowlegs and Ruddy Turnstones.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the day was an invitation I received from Global Birding to represent Nature Explorers Anguilla in a live presentation by Birdlife International - “Birds in Focus: A celebration with Birdlife International.”
The hour-long program featured bird enthusiasts from around the world including yours truly! It was an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and share Anguilla’s amazing birds. My bucket list of places to birdwatch has expanded, after this fun experience.
