Today, we celebrate the 58th Anguilla Day!
So, what is Anguilla Day all about? The Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce describes it as follows:
“On May 30th, 1967, Anguilla issued a unilateral declaration of independence and established itself as the “Republic of Anguilla.” Anguilla Day is commemorated with many festivities, including parades, cultural events, boat races, and local performances, all aimed at celebrating the island’s identity, history, and accomplishments. The festivities typically commence at the Ronald Webster Park, featuring an official parade led by the Commissioner of Police. The boat race is a highlight of the day’s events, offering a unique and thrilling experience for participants and spectators alike.”
Look to Wikipedia for a History of Anguilla.
The book, Under an English Heaven, is worth a read for those interested in the history of this period.
I will be enjoying the drama of the A Class Anguilla Day Around the Island Boat Race. May the best boat win!
