For those that thought Summer was just getting started - think again!
The nesting season is winding down on Anguilla. Seabird parents are preparing their young to be independent, as they will soon move back out to sea.
Meanwhile a few migrants have returned to our wetlands after their breeding season in the North.
It started out as a small number of sandpipers mingling with the nesting seabirds. Over the last week however, the groups have gotten bigger and spread across the island.
Many birds return to Anguilla displaying their spectacular breeding colors. The Semipalmated Plover and Greater Yellowlegs in this post are prime examples of breeding plumage. Of note is the dark head and breast band on the plover, and the intense barring on the Yellowlegs.
This is the first signal that Summer is winding down and we are heading for the Fall Migration. Within a few weeks birds on our wetlands will display a variety of plumages, making some species difficult to identify. This is a great time to brush up on breeding and juvenile plumages so you are ready to identify birds as they move.
Don’t forget that BirdCast provides the latest migration information for your area.

Thank you! We always go to Hog (aka Choate Island where The Crucible was filmed) in Essex MA in August to view the semipalmated plovers enjoy the shore. We get some yellow legs as well !
