We have arrived at a crossroads in the season between the ripening of local fruits and hungry birds. Even the slightest hint of yellow means a Papaya (Pawpaw) is fair game.
Suspect number one in this mystery is always the Pearly-eyed Thrasher! This bird is unrelenting in its pursuit of the perfect fruit.
While this species consumes various foods, fruits comprise most of its diet. In Anguilla, Pawpaw is a favorite.
While I lost one large piece of fruit, the other was saved, albeit with a few gouges.

The moral of today’s story: keep an eye on your fruit, but always be prepared to share!
Oh my gosh I love this so much! What a beautiful bird and the photos are amazing. We have a tree native to the US called the paw paw, which probably gets its name from the tropical papaya but is different. I'm trying to grow one in the yard in my attempts to re-native.
I symathize. Birds eat my figs before they're ripe. Dang!
