I completed the Anguilla surveys for the Great Backyard Bird Count on Monday. Over four days, I recorded 52 species of birds, including land, shore, and seabirds.
Six intrepid birders joined me Sunday morning for the Wild Side Walk on Long Pond IBA. They braved high wind and chilly temperatures for little reward. Birds were scarce at the site, but the Great Blue Heron was a consolation prize.
As of this publication, 7922 species have been recorded through over 280,000 checklists.
Baitfish in Long Pond Bay meant that many species of birds were feeding there. It was exciting to see several Brown Pelicans plunge-diving in the area. At this time of year, they are breeding on Prickly Pear West.
I spent the last afternoon enjoying pelicans, boobies, and terns as they fished in the wild waters of the bay. The Great Blue joined a Belted Kingfisher to search for a tasty meal. It was an excellent way to close out another year of the Great Backyard Bird Count!
Thank you to all who joined me for the Wild Side Walk. I hope for better weather and more birds on our next excursion.
Thank you, Jackie, very exciting report!
Beautiful photo of your sunrise on Long Pond Bay. At this time of year, where are the Pelicans coming from? Thank you for sharing your walks... on the Wide Side.
