The following statement from the UN Environment Programme sums up World Mangrove Day:
“The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated every year on 26 July, and aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.
This International Day was adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015.”
As many of you may recall, on September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma destroyed a significant stand of Red Mangrove on West End Pond. If you missed it, this link briefly summarizes the work Nature Explorers Anguilla did to restore the site.
While the restoration work continues, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many donors and volunteers who made this work possible! This day is for all of you.
